📍GR is tough on renters | October 6th, 2024

Good morning, Grand Rapids. This is Calder News - the newsletter helping 700+ GR locals start their week with everything they need to know about what’s happening in their backyard.

Hope you had a solid weekend. And are off to a great start on this fine Monday morning. 💃

In today’s news:

  • GR is tough on renters

  • The downtown soccer stadium is almost a reality

  • A few things from over the weekend

Let’s dive in…

What’s Happening

Housing | According to a study on 137 rental markets, Grand Rapids is ranked the 11th toughest places for renters. The study was based on 5 factors — available housing, occupancy, lease renewal rates, average days on the market, and newly constructed housing.

Development | Grand Rapid’s $175M soccer stadium is one step closer to becoming a reality. The stadium (set at the intersection of Pearl and Mount Vernon) led by Grand Action 2.0 is nearing its target funding from public and private investors — following a $5M injection from a local entertainment authority last week. The stadium is expected to be built with $115M in public funds and $60M in private donations. About $15.3M has been collected from private sources, while public funding is secured.

Quick hits | Recap from this weekend:

  • On Saturday, a local barber named Chris McCoy provided free haircuts for the homeless community around Heartside Park.

  • GRPD officers and community members came together on Saturday for a “unity walk”. The walk was done to bring awareness to local crime and reduce violence in our backyards.

A Red Flag fire warning was issued for Grand Rapids on Sunday. According to the National Weather Service, Red Flat Warnings are issued when weather conditions are or will shortly be ripe for causing fires. The warnings concluded last night. A barn fire broke out in Ottawa County.

  • Senator Bernie Sanders stopped in Grand Rapids on Sunday to rally support for Harris-Walz.
