đź“ŤRecord breaking heat | October 9th, 2024

Good morning, Grand Rapids. This is Calder News - the newsletter for busy GR locals who are already thinking about the weekend.

Lucky for you, there’s more than enough stuff to do before then. 🫡

In today’s news:

  • Grand Rapids breaks its own record

  • GRPS students go to college for free

  • Local business lives on

Let’s get into it

Record-Breaking Heat

Grand Rapids is on fire. Not literally, but according to data from Wood TV, Grand Rapid’s heat throughout 2024 has shattered a longtime record.

On September 27th, Grand Rapids surpassed its previous record for days of 70-degree (or higher) weather in a calendar year — the new record is 157 days and we still have 84 days left this year.

The previous record was 153 days. And It was set 17 years ago (2007).

What’s Happening

Education | Local donor sends GRPS students to college for free

Thanks to an anonymous local donor, 15 GRPS students are going to Michigan State University for free. This means their tuition, room, boarding, fees, and every fee you can think of will be covered. And once they graduate, they’ll be fast-tracked to become teachers at GRPS — bringing GRPS’s alumni to its workforce.

Business | Fat Boy Burger lives to fight serve another day

The NE staple Fat Boy isn’t going anywhere yet. A couple of months after the burger joint was set to close due to tough times, our community did what we do best—showed up. And with the influx of support, Fat Boy seems to be in a better financial situation, posting thanks to the community they plan on “hanging in there as long as they can.” If you’re in the area, stop by and give them a try!

Environment | Contamination on the river

A former landfill along the Grand River was declared a PFAS contamination site. The landfill is located at 1450 Butterworth ST and operated for 23 years, officially closing in 1973. The site was investigated due to the site’s history of accepting waste from known contaminators — Wolverine Worldwide and local plating companies. (more information)

Community | The SE side is getting a new childhood center

The Boston Square neighborhood on the SE side of town is getting an early childhood center to offer multilingual and accessible education. The center will be able to support 77 children — from infants to 5 years old. The development of the project is expected to be completed next year.

Fitness | Planning ahead: The River Bank Run

Registration for the 48th annual Amway River Bank Run has opened. The River Bank Run is the largest 25k road race in the country — bringing together 12,000+ community members a year. (register here)
