Laws
New Michigan housing law
Gov. Whitmer signed a new law to ban landlords from rejecting renters over their income source. Under the new law, landlords with 5 or more properties can no longer deny tenants based on income sources (like section 8, social security, etc). The new law is estimated to help house 35,000+ Michiganders. | Read more
Local Business
Woodland Mall’s spotlight restaurant closes
The jigs up — Woodland’s Black Rock Bar & Grill is closed for good. The restaurant opened in the Fall of 2019 as the primary restaurant at the mall. It served items like “steak on a stone” that let guests use a hot rock to cook steak to their liking. | Read the story

The City of Walker started a podcast
The City of Walker launched a podcast. The show is called “Made in Walker” and features community news, local businesses, and stories from Walker locals. The podcast goes live today, so if you’re in the area check it out. | Learn more here
How to get rid of your Christmas tree
Still have your Christmas tree? The city has set up a few free drop-off sites around town. After you remove any decorations, you can drop trees off to be junked for free at Riverside Park, Jaycee, Lincoln Park, or Huff Park. If you can’t go to any of those drop-offs, pick-ups are also available. | Click here to learn more

Interesting happenings around town
⚾️ Pickleball anyone?
The west side has a new pickleball spot. Pickle & Pin opened at 662 Leonard St. near Alpine this weekend. The site offers 3 regulation-size pickleball courts, Golf VX sims, and a bar. I loathe to admit it, but I haven’t played pickleball yet…
📽️ Grand Rapids lights up the silver screen
Grand Rapids is the new Hollywood. A local filmmaker and his studio are creating a movie that features local actors and locations in a story anyone can relate to. The crew is crowd-funding the film production. And their goal is almost met — click here to support and let them know Calder News sent ya!
🎹 Interactive benches installed downtown
A pair of musical benches were installed at Cloud Corner downtown. The benches are functional and fun allowing anyone to sit and play a xylophone at the same time.
