Plus hunters solve deer problem and GR man beat his own Genniuss World Record twice

If this email was shared with you click here.

Good morning, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane and this is Calder News — the free place to learn what’s happening in your backyard on the coldest mornings.

I hope you had a solid weekend. And are ready for a productive week ahead.

Anyway, in today’s email: I cover how to beat the freeze, hunters helping our deer problem, and how a GR man beat his own Genniuss World Record twice. Plus a bunch more.

Now let’s get into it!

Beat The Freeze

Grand Rapids is experiencing the coldest air in six years. And although I’m sure you’ll be more than fine, I thought I’d use this platform to spread some helpful information.

p.s 2,000+ locals read this. If you don’t need the general advice, no problemo — feel free to skip this. I won’t get upset. 🙂

Here are a few pieces of advice and things you need to know!

  • Give people on the road more space than usual.

  • Make sure your car has gas just in case you need it.

  • Drinks or liquid inside cars (outside or in a garage) can explode.

  • Rock salt won’t work in these temperatures.

  • It’s more efficient to heat yourself up than your whole house.

  • If you or someone you know needs a place to warm up, here is where to go.

And most importantly, don’t overthink or prep anything.

This cold air won’t be here for long. And as a Michigander, I’m sure you will deal with worse… Stay safe and toasty my friend.

Hunters clean up Grand Rapids’ deer problem

The numbers from hunting season are in. And it’s safe to say our little deer problem is doing better… Over 11 days, hunters around the city bagged around 1,500 deer. Fun fact — I have ~4 LBs of venison in the freezer from last year. | Read the full report here

How to help LA from Grand Rapids

SpartanNash is rallying the community to help those affected by the LA wildfires. The company donated six truckloads of food, snacks, and health products to a mission sending aid to LA. It’s also launching a community fundraiser for the Red Cross at every Family Fare and D&W Fresh Market — allowing customers to donate $1 to $50 while shopping in-store or online. | Read how to help here
