Good morning, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane and this is Calder News — And it’s Cinco de Mayo!

While it’s not Mexico’s Independence Day (that’s in September), it is a great reason to support local Latino-owned businesses, grab a taco, and support Hispanic culture, resilience, and community.

Want a restaurant to check out? Here are dozens of recommendations from GR locals.

Anyhow, in today’s newsletter, you’ll read about free cash for students, new development, and programs helping local homelessness.

Education

Students Can Win Big

The state just launched a “Ticket to Tuition” sweepstakes that offers $1 million in scholarships to first-time FAFSA filers in Michigan. 10 winners will get $50,000 each, while another 40 will get $10,000 toward tuition, housing, or school supplies. The goal? Get more students to apply for federal aid and make college more accessible. | Get/ share details on how to enter

Development

WM Hispanic Chamber Breaks Ground

Ground has broken on The West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s new 12,000 square foot center on Godfrey Ave SW. The $11.6 million facility, backed by state, federal, and private funding, will offer expanded space for events, programs, and business support. Named the Center for Latino Economic and Talent Advancement, it’s expected to open by February 2026 and serve as a long-term investment in the city’s Latino entrepreneurs and workforce. | Read more about the building

Public Health

More Help For Unhoused Residents

Starting June 2, Grand Rapids is expanding its Homeless Outreach Team into a new 24/7 Medical Outreach Team. The revamped program will take a casework approach, helping unhoused residents access ongoing medical care and reduce unnecessary 911 calls. Social workers and medical staff will work side by side to connect people to the resources they need—whether it's mental health care, substance treatment, or dialysis—offering consistent support around the clock. | Learn more about the program
