Good morning, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane and this is Calder News, the local newsletter that feels like the morning paper on the kitchen table.

Why are we hitting your inbox on a Tuesday morning?

New year, new schedule. I will be publishing our newsletter twice a week (Tuesday and Friday) instead of the previous three times a week. It’ll take me a while to get used to writing on Monday nights.

But it’s the best move for now.

The new schedule will enable me to hire a writer, cover interesting stories, and improve your experience as a reader of our newsletters as we progress into this new year.

With that, let’s get into the neeewwss.

World Of Winter Returns

Winter around GR is about to get a tad more interesting this week.

The World of Winter Festival is kicking off on Friday and will run through. Turning downtown into an outdoor winter playground. It’s the largest free winter festival in the country, featuring glowing art installations, performances, and hands-on events spread across a walkable downtown.

What to know before you go:

  • Mostly free events, art, and activities

  • Light-based art from artists around the world

  • Family-friendly, date-night friendly, and everything in between

Can’t-miss highlights:

  • Fire & Ice street party and ice carving demos (Jan. 10)

  • Silent Disco, Ice Piano, Snowga, and Circus Wonderland

  • Luminary Bike Ride (Jan. 15)

  • Human Hungry Hippo Tournament + Noodle Fest to close it out

Perfect excuse to bundle up, get out, and enjoy the downtown in a whole new light.
