How To Help
Itโs been a rough couple of weeks for our brothers and sisters along the coasts. Although itโs difficult to talk about these sorts of disasters when they happen, I felt I needed to do so.
Just 16h-19h from West Michigan, Hurricane Milton, and Heleneโฆ
Left millions are without power
Took hundreds of people from their families
Destroyed towns
Temporarily (and permanently) displaced an undisclosed amount of people
And thatโs not even the tip of the iceberg for those affected.
While itโs all too common to swipe past the news and leave likes, and nice words in comment sections, a handful of local businesses and community members in Grand Rapids are getting active โ doing what they can to support those affected by these terrible storms.
Itโs important I do my part to bring those going out of their way to help some awareness by sharing what theyโre doing.
Whether you are in a position to give or not โ here are a few things you can do right here in Grand Rapids to help those affected by Helene and Milton.
ST. Paul The Apostle | Drop off supplies at 2750 Burton on Friday from 8 AM- 4 PM
St. Robert | Drop off supplies at 6477 Ada Dr. Se on Friday 8 AM- 4 PM
Spartan Nash | Bring non-perishable snacks to collection bins at Forest Hills Foods, D&W Fresh Market in Grand Haven, and Family Fare in Allendale
GVSU | Bring non-perishable snacks to collection bins at its home football game on Saturday from 3 PM - 7 PM in Parking Lot B2 at WLAVโs booth
Notos Cascade | Take supplies to 6600 28th St Se on Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM - 6 PM
Thanks to these businesses, organizations, and the GR community for the support. Every little bit goes a long way in times like this - youโre appreciated.
Whatโs Happening
Cultural | A local tribe could be federally recognized
Two Michigan Senators have introduced new legislation to grant federal recognition to the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians โ a sovereign nation of 19 bands that has certified agreements with the government dating back to 1795. Most of the tribeโs members (~500 people) live in Kent, Muskegon, and Oceana counties. And if Congress passes this bill, the nation will have access to funding, resources, and federal programs.
Development | Grand Rapid formed a land bank
Grand Rapids has become the second city in Michigan to form its own land bank โ an authority that gives the โbanksโ overseers the ability to tear down, sell, or renovate abandoned buildings, homes, commercial buildings, etc around town.
First Responders | GRFD got a new licenses
First responders with the GRFD can now save lives. Since last month, GRFD has been licensed to provide basic life support without the presence of medical professionals.
Local Government | Lawmakers are being pressured to fix Michigan roads
The yearly conversation about roads is back, but this time itโs getting serious. First, Michiganders spoke up. Now Michiganโs Infrastructure and Transporation Association (MITA) is asking questions about why Michigan roads are underfunded โ calling lawmakers to make up a $3B+ shortfall to fix our roads. Whatโs the chance this goes anywhere? My guess - 20%โฆ
๐ง Road update: It took 7 months, but Cesar E. Chavez Ave. between Clyde Park and Hall St. has reopened.

Unless I find an absurd photo I just canโt help but feature, I promise I wonโt share any Northern Lights images next weekโฆ
