Our furniture industry started back in when The Grand Rapids Chair Company was founded back in fall of 1836.

After a few mergers over the years, that company grew into what is now known as Steelcase.

Now that you’re aware of a random fact I found last night, let’s get into the news.

Crime Rates Dropping

Last week at a public safety meeting, GRPD’s Chief said crime is on a trend down, with big drops in auto thefts, robberies, and violent crimes. What’s with the change? The department thinks full staffing levels and faster 911 response times helped the progress. | Read more

Local Step Up During SNAP Pause

With SNAP benefits set to go on hold, a few businesses and locals are looking to help. Lotus Brew Coffee on Diamond has expanded its free pantry and is hosting weekly community potlucks. Fulton Street Market has added a dry food pantry. Grandville Public Schools is also offering free breakfast and lunch to all students through the pause. | More details on snap pause

GRAM Gets $2M For Repairs

The GRAM has received $2M in state funding to fix major issues in its main building downtown. The funds will go toward replacing damaged floor grates, upgrading the security system, and upgrading aging lighting. The whole project is $7.3M and is supported by both state and private funding. | Learn more

Midnight Masquerade at The Villa Bar

If you’re looking for a fun way to celebrate Halloween (as an adult).

The newly opened Villa Bar & Banquet is hosting a night of suspense and dancing on Saturday, from 6 PM to midnight.

The evening starts with hors d’oeuvres and an interactive murder mystery dinner, followed by a costume contest and DJ dance party.

Guests can also visit The Dungeon lounge for themed drinks and late-night bites.

And if you were wondering, costumes are encouraged.

Talk Of The Town

🚴‍♀️ Bike Lanes on the NE Side

The NE side of town has received new protected bike lanes on Ann Street and Boston Street. The improvements are a small part of GR’s plan to make the city more bikeable.

🔮 The 12th House → After 4 years of supporting local handmade goods and artists, The 12th House, just outside of Downtown, announced its closing up shop

Opening:

Meijer Gas Station → The new Meijer Gas Station on the corner of 28th and Kalamazoo is now open for business

🥕 Rodriguez Supermarket → After over a year of remodeling the old Walgreens on Division and 28th, the Rodriguez Supermarket has celebrated its grand opening
