📍 How to kick off Spring Break in GR | April 4th, 2025

Plus, Grand River oil spill update, a new elementary school, and weekend fun

If this email was shared with you click here.

Good Afternoon, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane, and this is Calder News — with your first Friday of the month issue.

Just wanted to take a quick moment to correct a mistake in Wednesday’s newsletter.

I said, “Grand Rapids was incorporated as a city on April 2nd, 1950”. But that is incorrect.

The city was incorporated in 1850 — I fat-fingered the 9… 🥲

I appreciate the folks who saw this error and brought it to my attention. I’m far from perfect, so if you catch an error, let me know!

Now, in today’s newsletter, you’ll read about an oil spill, a new elementary school, public support increases, and some things to do for Spring Break.

I hope you have a great weekend. Thanks for reading Calder News today!

Make Summer Break Memorable

Together with The YMCA

YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin is gearing up for another summer of adventure. From zip-lining and canoeing to campfires and s’mores, it’s the perfect place for kids to stay active, make new friends, and build confidence.

With options for day camp, overnight camp, and teen leadership programs, there’s something for every age. Let camp counselors handle the fun while you enjoy a little summer break, too.

Curious to learn more? Check out their open house on April 13 from 2–5 p.m. Tour the camp, try the rock wall, do crafts, and see what YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin is all about.

Talk Of The Town

Interesting happenings around town

 Baseball is back

The West Michigan Whitecaps kick off their 2025 season tonight at LMCU Ballpark against the Dayton Dragons. Park goers will notice major upgrades this year—new terraces, a fully replaced field, and revamped menus.

💛 Why Ribbons Are in Ridgemoor

Hundreds of yellow ribbons have been tied around trees in the Ridgemoor neighborhood to honor 5-year-old Baylor Marco, who passed away last week. The ribbons stand as a symbol of community support for the Marco family after Baylor’s organ donations gave the gift of life to others.
