Good morning, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane and this is Calder News —it’s Monday, the coffee’s doing its best, and somewhere in the city, construction season just added a new detour.
Let’s kick off the week with what’s worth knowing around town.

Community Night Out

Tomorrow is “National Night Out” day.
It’s the annual day that hundreds of thousands of communities around the United States aim to foster positive relationships between the people, local law enforcement, and residents.
In our case, it’s a series of fun, family-friendly community block parties.
Here are the community gatherings happening around town:

John Ball Zoo Plans Massive Aquarium
John Ball Zoo just released concept images for its aquarium along the Grand River in Walker. In case you didn’t know, the $370 million project would transform an old landfill site into a top-tier attraction featuring immersive exhibits, wetlands trails, and research facilities. If all goes smoothly, doors could open by 2031, bringing jobs, tourists, and a nearly $3 billion economic boost to Kent County over the next decade. | View the images here
Roadwork
Highway Closure
Heads up, the exit ramp from northbound U.S. 131 to 28th Street (M-11) will be closed from 9 AM to 3 PM Monday through Friday this week for construction.

🤝 Looking To Get Involved?
Kent County is looking to recruit residents to serve by appointment on its boards, commissions, and committees. There are dozens of openings ranging from agriculture, aging residents advisory, to roadwork commissions.
🐻❄️ John Ball Zoo’s New Snow Leopard
Last week, John Ball Zoo’s Snow Leopard gave birth to a cub. While the two aren’t viewable by the public, given they maintain good health, either will be viewable together this Fall.
