What’s Happening

A briefing of local news that matters

Development:  GRPL offers more to the public

On Monday, the Grand Rapids Public Library received a $1 million check from the state to help renovate its Community Archives and Research Center. The archive building, located on Washington Street, houses more than 90% of the museum's collection. The building is not accessible to the public; however, the check will go toward a $3.75M project to redevelop the space for public use.

Community: A greener Grand Rapids

Friends of Grand Rapids Parks (a local non-profit) has reached their goal of planting over 1,000 trees downtown. They also raised the downtown tree canopy coverage goal from 5% to 10%. Pretty neat if ya ask me.

Municipal:  City official moves up

Our City Manager Mark Washington could be moving to the big city. Washington is one of four remaining candidates for an open City Manager role in Dallas Texas.

More community  Turkey Trot update

This year’s GRPS Turkey Trot announced plans for a new route. Due to construction on Fulton and Division, this year’s race will start in front of the Van Andel, go left on Ionia, then head up Crescent Street. Click here to learn how to participate or learn more about the Turkey Trot.

Local Business

A local pastry shop is going nationwide.

After years of serving locals with savory and sweet Bosnian pastries, Burek’s “Burek Bites” have landed in all midwest Gordan Food Service stores.

Although Burek makes a wide range of flavored pastries, only Burek’s Sinica (cheese), Zeljanica (cheese/spinach), and Burek Bites (beef) are available in-store.

If you shop at GFS, could be worth a try!
