đź“ŤOver the weekend in GR | October 14th, 2024

Good morning, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane, and this is Calder News - your favorite newsletter (I hope).

If you haven’t noticed, this is only our third week of publishing Calder News and there have already been 25,000 small changes in formatting, style, etc to the newsletter.

I’m doing my best to take your feedback and make the newsletter as good as it can be - so I appreciate you bearing with me while I’m figuring things out. And if you’re new here, don’t worry, you’ll probably notice some changes soon too.

Nonetheless, thank you for checking into Calder News, your support means so much to me (especially while I find my footing with this). 🤗

In today’s news:

  • Indoor micro farms

  • An inclusive children’s play space opens

  • Kamala Harris is coming to GR

What Happened Over The Weekend…

Agriculture:  New startup pitches indoor micro farms

A Wyoming-based startup named BitFarms is bringing "micro-farms" to schools, healthcare facilities, and retirement communities. These micro-farms are a fresh take on indoor hydroponic farming—allowing institutions to grow produce on-site. The first unit has been installed in Hope College's kitchen.

Development:  Meijer Sports Complex gets a facelift

The Meijer Sports Complex in Rockford is undergoing a $13.5 million renovation. Last week, construction crews broke ground on a project that will add 20 pickleball courts, two baseball diamonds, a playground, and 300 parking spaces to the existing facility.

Local Business:  A play space for children on the spectrum opens

A new business opening in Plainfield will offer a play space designed for children with autism and other disabilities. We Rock The Spectrum, located at 4550 Plainfield Ave, opens this Saturday.

Election:  Kamala Harris is coming to GR

Vice President Kamala Harris is making a pit stop in Grand Rapids on Friday. However, there's no word on where or when she’ll come. So all I can say for now is expect some road closures. I'll make sure to update ya if more information becomes available before Wednesday's newsletter.
