Good afternoon, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane and this is Calder News — and I created something you’ve been asking for: a calendar of recurring events.

I’ll be taking this weekend to fill it up with some events I’m aware of, but if you have a favorite regularly recurring event to add, please send the details my way by clicking here.

Now, let’s get into today’s newsletter.

P.S. There will be no issue of Calder News published on Monday!

Oxford Trail Expansion

The city is set to start work on a $9 million project to improve the Oxford Trail to Hall, connecting neighborhoods near the Grand River’s southwest side. The upgraded path will feature new pavement, lighting, seating, and picnic areas. The state and local organizations fund the upgrades and is a small part of the larger Grand River Greenway linking Lowell to Lake Michigan with 85 miles of trail.

GRPS Feeds 10k+ Students

Here’s an interesting article I read this week. GRPS serves more than 10,000 free breakfasts and lunches daily through a federal program that covers all students. On average, 5,100 breakfasts and 9,700 lunches are provided each day across the district. And the best part is the students’ families don’t need to apply they just need to go to school. It’s easy to overlook these small but impactful things, so I thought i’d highlight it today. | Read more

Housing

The lot at 301 Leonard St. NE will soon become a five-story mixed-use project with 171 apartments with retail space called The Horizon. There will be studio and 1-2 bedroom apartments with rents around $1,100 - $2,200. The $46 million development will feature underground parking, a courtyard, and community amenities. | Learn more about what’s coming here
