How Grand Rapids Performed This Year

Courtesy of Wood TV8

Local leaders and economists gathered at the 2025 Economic Outlook for Grand Rapids yesterday.

The group reviewed data from this year and discussed roadmaps for growth in the upcoming year.

What did the experts have to say about Grand Rapids?

Here are some takeaways from the forum:

  • Grand Rapids is “performing” when compared to peer cities

  • New developments like the amphitheater, soccer stadium, and skyscraper project are projected to drive economic growth

  • Annual data shows the biggest job growth is in tech and manufacturing

  • The local labor shortage is clearing up

With all the doom and gloom happening it’s nice to see optimism from leaders in our backyard.

What’s Happening

A briefing of local news that matters

Recreation: Rosa Park Circle opens

Grab your skates. After being postponed for 24 hours, the Rosa Park Circle ice rink is expected to open today. Reservations are available, but (to my knowledge) walk-ups are accepted as well.

News:  Zoo gets a greenlight

The zoo is getting upgraded. Kent County commissioners approved a 10-year “master plan” for John Ball Zoo. The plan will allow zoo operators to redevelop its property to make space for new exhibits for giraffes, and jaguars, plus a a 30-foot waterfall for its forest habitat.

Interesting:  One in a million

Feeling lucky? Because someone in Grand Rapids was actually lucky. According to reports, a Grand Rapids local was one of two Michigan Lottery players to win a $2.86M jackpot.

Kindness Of The Week

A local non-profit is spreading holiday cheer.

On Wednesday local entrepreneurs and philanthropists Chris Andrus and Chef Jenna paid the grocery bills for dozens of shoppers at Ralph’s Grocery Store.

The best part? This wasn’t the only thing they’ve done for the community.

The duo has hosted multiple similar random acts of kindness since launching the Mitten Foundation non-profit in 2017.

Yes, this is our second kindness of the week, but hey I love highlighting good things happening in the community — can ya blame me?
