Good afternoon, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane and this is Calder News — here to get you caught up on what’s happening around town before the weekend.

In today’s newsletter, you’ll read about the Mayor’s first speech, a book sale, tiny homes, and of course, fun things to do around town this weekend.

But before we get into the newsletter…

How many more "fake" starts to Spring do we have left?

p.s Spring officially started yesterday morning

My take — we’ve got 1 - 2 more false starts before we’re really in Spring. Now let’s get into today’s newsletter.

Mayor LaGrand’s First Address

Yesterday, Mayor David LaGrand gave his first State of the City address and it focused on housing, public safety, and city design. With 12,000 new housing units needed in two years, LaGrand is pushing to use the city’s land bank to help with developing new housing. As for public safety, according to LaGrand crime is down. But this is just a bit of what was discussed in the address. | Click here to read a full recap

GRPL’s Massive Book Sale

The Grand Rapids Public Library’s main branch is hosting a two-day book sale next month. And the sale will be massive. On the first day, it’ll feature hundreds of previously owned books for just 50¢ each. On the second day, there will be a “$5 fill a bag” sale. The best part? Every dollar goes back into library programs that keep GR reading all year long. | Learn more about the book sale here

Good Deed Of The Week

Earlier this week, a local non-profit based in Coopersville named Lori's Voice provided a life-changing gift to 11-year-old Vivian Gray and her family.

The non-profit donated a wheelchair-accessible van to help Vivian, who is fighting brain cancer, cerebral palsy, and other health problems, gain the ability to travel with her family.

A little more on Lori’s Voice — since it was founded in 2011 the non-profit has helped over 700 Michigan families with specialized equipment, therapy costs, and other needs not covered by insurance, while also giving over $3 million in financial assistance.

Gotta love the good deeds 🫶
