Good morning, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane and this is Calder News — pumpkin spice is back, football is kicking off, and with the mornings getting chillier by the day, fall is coming up quick.
Which leads me to a question for you…
With that out of the way, let’s jump into today’s email.

GR FACTS: Tunnels Beneath Downtown

Courtesy of WZZM 13
Did you know there's a network of tunnels that runs beneath Calder Plaza?
Built in the 1960s, walkable tunnels once connected the federal building, county offices, and parking ramps, making it easy to move between downtown buildings without stepping outside.
After 9/11, most of the tunnels were sealed for security reasons. But there are a few still around. There's one under Ottawa Avenue that links the Calder Plaza garage to 300 Ottawa, where you'll find a hallway that even has a few stores.
There are tons of hidden gems around town. And I look forward to sharing the interesting ones that I can find!

Housing Planned for MLK Area
A $3.5 million project is set to bring a 16-unit mixed-use apartment building to the MLK neighborhood. The development would turn the abandoned Metro PCS on MLK St. and Sheldon Ave. into a 12,000-square-foot building with studio and 1-bedroom units targeting middle-income renters. The project is backed by a $200,000 city grant in addition to the land owner's private funding. | More details
