Hello, Grand Rapids. I’m LeQwane and this is Calder News — the best email that you’ll receive on any given Friday. Other than a confirmation your paycheck was deposited- of course.

In today’s email, I talk about Kent County’s poetry competition, new affordable housing, and LaughFest’s kickoff details.

Along with a bunch of fun things to do if you have time off this weekend.

I hope you enjoy today’s read. And thanks for your continued support.

State campground fee increases

State campground fees are expected to see their first price hike in 3 years. The DNR recently released an announcement that Michigan’s campgrounds will get a raise from $4 to $10 (depending on location and amenities). While overnight lodging rates will go from $60 to $120 per night. The increase will help fund the park’s operations and continued improvements. | Read more on the rate changes here

Housing

More affordable housing is on the way

A local organization is building affordable housing on the SE side of town. The ICCF Community Homes org. announced it has taken on a $4.2M project to build 15 apartments out of the old post office at 2017 Eastern. The housing project is currently underway. And set to be complete around 2027. The units will only be rented to locals making 30% to 120% of the neighborhood’s median income with priority going to residents already in the area. | Read the full story here
